Book Club

So I think have a space to review books and other such things would be a great idea, right? Right? RIGHT?!

Being the sort of girl who will not pop in but hop in to a Barnes and Noble just for kicks, I feel confident in saying that I am as well read as the next Noble tenant. I happen to be quite partial to Fantasy of all sorts and so whenever I drop in on my second home, I naturally gravitate towards the Fantasy/ Sci- Fi section (it's more like an irreverent stumble if you ask me, but then again I stumble quite prettily). My problem is that while I am rather liberal with the sort of Fantasy I will read, I generally like the same sort of frame. I like reading about women, so sue me (Actually don't). I can read about men--it's not like I would die-- but the guy has to be awesome. Like Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesparia awesome (you can only know if you have played the game). I like it when the women are real; If you're going to be a princess, be a princess with all her privilege and vanity not powder puff Mary Sue-- so I love real conflict within characters. Yes it would be lovely if the character were as cool Seal as well, but I can only ask so much without being unreasonable. Uncool characters are also welcome.

In this light, I'd have to say that the ideal books for me were from the Kushiel Trilogy. I loved Phedre and her her ill-fated name--everything about her really. Yes there was some naughtiness to be had in these tales (which shocked me at first), but I think that a young woman needs to read that sort of thing at least once in her life. It helps her grow up a little, debunking the myths of sex while still allowing the act to be something exquisite. Add to that the benefits of a book can be beautifully crafted, like the Kushiel's trilogy or delightfully witty, and you will find me a rather adorable hermit until the tome has been read through. With this in mind you will begin to see why I was running into a dilemma: too much fantasy is geared at young men who are, excuse me, looking for an escape. This escape can be anything from living an ordinary life to a severely felt "lack of lover." Wonderfully complicated and conflicted women sprinkled with sparkling prose do not usually arise in these tales because the demographic (and this is a gross generalization) does not call for it. In short, I was running out of books. And I needed new authors, new books to feed my veracious appetite. I did find the Green Rider series (which I will discuss later in another post) but even the Green Rider series pales in comparison to the gem I discovered today.

"Emma Bull is really good" said Neil Gaiman. With an introduction like that from THE Neil Gaiman, I felt almost dared to read War of the Oaks. Now I haven't finished, in fact I am only a couple chapters in which should indicate how excited I am about this book, but I have to say that Neil Gaiman was right (duh.) Emma Bull is not just really good, she is a master artesian. Her prose is a raucous riot--I actually laugh out loud and stop to bask in the warm feelings her words elicit. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK. End of story. If you have any love of Fantasy you will read this book and you shall do so now. That is all. Full stop.

But seriously I will post again about this book when I have actually finished reading. Along with my thoughts on the Green Rider series. This post can be found as a comment in my "Book Club" section!

Blogger news

So I have been hinting at this, but just to confirm all of your suspicions, yes, I am Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. In all seriousness, I am once again abroad--In Israel now--and once things have settled into some form of normalcy I will begin to blog about my experiences here--and they are many!

About

More often than not, I read blogs that serve as daily diaries of a sort or review trollops (not that I don't enjoy my review strumpets). Astrum Umbrarum (or "of star shadows" as the Latin is translated), lies somewhere in between, as I have discovered over the years. Life Reviews. As I live, and travel, create and explore, I will discover beautiful things. This space is where I hope to share those things with all the snark they deserve.
